Key point: A rollover is an account-funding process, not an investment recommendation. Eligibility and tax handling depend on the source account, distribution type and the way funds move.

Start with eligibility, not the metal

Key federal rollover concepts, including eligible distributions, direct rollovers and the 60-day rule. Before discussing products, confirm that the source account can make the intended distribution and that the receiving arrangement is permitted to accept it. Employer plans have their own documents and distribution rules.

For eligible retirement-plan distributions, the IRS describes three common approaches: a direct rollover from a plan, a trustee-to-trustee transfer involving an IRA, or a rollover after funds are paid to you. A distribution paid to you can trigger withholding and a 60-day deadline, which is why process details matter.

Why direct movement is worth understanding

When retirement assets move directly between eligible institutions, the investor generally avoids taking possession of the funds. That can simplify withholding and timing issues compared with a check paid to the account owner. It does not eliminate the need to verify plan rules, investment suitability or provider costs.

Questions to ask before you sign anything

  • Is this distribution eligible to roll over?
  • Can the receiving IRA accept the intended assets?
  • Who is the custodian, and who is the metals dealer?
  • What setup, administration, transaction and storage charges apply?
  • What happens if you later want to sell or take a distribution?
Tax caution: The IRS says most eligible distributions paid to you must generally be rolled over within 60 days to preserve rollover treatment. Some distributions, including required minimum distributions, are not eligible rollovers. Verify your specific facts with the plan administrator and a qualified tax professional.

How this connects to a precious-metals IRA

A rollover does not itself buy gold. It changes where eligible retirement assets are held. If the receiving self-directed IRA permits precious metals, the account can then purchase qualifying products through the appropriate custody and storage structure. Compare that structure with simpler investment options before proceeding.
