Gold IRA Storage Explained
Why IRA-owned bullion generally cannot simply be kept at home and what to ask about approved storage arrangements.
The account comes first
Why IRA-owned bullion generally cannot simply be kept at home and what to ask about approved storage arrangements. A "Gold IRA" is commonly used to describe a self-directed IRA that can hold certain qualifying precious metals. The tax wrapper is the IRA; the gold or other metal is an asset held inside it.
Not every coin or bar qualifies
Federal law generally treats metals and coins as collectibles for IRA purposes, but provides exceptions for certain coins and sufficiently refined bullion when statutory requirements are met. Product eligibility should be confirmed with the custodian rather than inferred from marketing language or the appearance of a coin.
Custody and storage matter
The IRS states that qualifying bullion must be in the physical possession of a bank or an approved nonbank trustee. That makes casual "home storage IRA" claims a high-risk area for investors. A legitimate process should make the roles of custodian, dealer and storage facility clear.
Taxes depend on the account and transaction
Traditional and Roth arrangements have different contribution and distribution treatment. Rollovers, conversions, required distributions and early withdrawals can have consequences that cannot be determined from a generic web article. Treat tax discussions here as educational starting points.
